First, there is a lot of violence, bang-bang. Yes, I like vioelnce movie!!! Second, the acting is good. I forgot the names of the actor(esse)s. But they were gooood. Third, the film (shooting) was good as well. But what is really interesting about the movie is its attitude regaring violence. The movie is the story of a group of Italian(I think) boys who grew up to make an organization of gangsters. I would not detail the storyline. Anyhow the director or the script writer does not seem to like vioelnce on one hand. A bad ganster dies eventually. And a slightly good gangester also finishes with a so-so life. However, there is a feeling of understanding the vioelnce in this part of American history when vioelnce was part of the life. The Italian boys had to be violent to survive their time. It was the time of violence, fraud, and corruption. The main chracter joins his freinds of gansters AGAINST his will because the time conditioned his life as such. I think what the movie is implying is "Once upon a time in America," there was a time when many people HAD to be violent to survive. Some poeple chose violence without any regretts in their hearts. But many people, the movie implies, chose violence despite their conscience because violence was the only way of life to them. I think the movie is an expression of the sympathy for those people. [End of Non-official review of the movie] One upon a time in Korea, there was also a time of vioelnce. Politics was violent. Society was vioent. And family relationship was violent. And a boy had to survive this time. He had to survive the hunger of Korean War. Moreover he had to survive the loss of his father during the war. Without money, without education, without father, he faced the vioelnt society head on at the age of 18. Then he had to survive the 4.19 Revolution, 5.16 coup, and Yu-sin. Politics was crazy. Society was crazy as well. Everybody was crazy to make a qucik money. Some people made it. But many didn't. There was no rule of the game. The only rule was, alas, to survive by any means necessary. Quite often the meaner the means were, the better the results were. But he had no luck in the struggle of the jungle. He had not the gut or the cleverness to succeed in this brutal society. Rather he was always a loser. He moved from a job to another one. The pay was always low. Beating was not uncommon in the job. He probabaly tried several times to follow the way other people used to succeed. But he was no match to those people. He could not be that mean like some of his friends. His deceased father taught him not to rob anything from other people. He had a great respect for his father. He tried to get rich without using violence to other people. When he realized it was imposssible, he gave up the hope of success and decided to just survive the time. That's all he could do. And he had to survive, becasue, becasue, he had a wife and children by that time. S.O.S |
