From my experience, there is a really easy way of doing it. First of all, don't ever install more than one X server. Make your mind, leave with it. Use script built utility for Xconfig. It is under /usr/X386/lib/XConfigXF86. I hope you install this valuable utility. Answer most of them as default. The hard thing is the monitor section. If you can't find your monitor in a list, then try no. 1--generic svga monitor. The utility will spit several modes. Then choose couple of modes which fit best for your monitor.
