In all cases I have tried to encounter people and/or lists to which the topic of my post would pertain. You all seemed to me to be interested in the Korean language, and my research centers around trying to increase recognition of your language by using it in our study and making the data available world wide for computer (speech recognition) research. This is truly a very fascinating study and many many people all over the world will benifit from this data collection and from your essential help. Please read on to see how you can be a part of this research. If you are a list owner, I would ask that you seriously consider posting this on your list. If you feel that it is inappropriate, I understand, but perhaps you could forward it to others who may find it more in line with their interests. We do offer an award in our appreciation for the phone calls we receive. We offer this award totally at our own cost, and do not in any way make a profit off of this study. There are a few places on the web that you can find out about us, and particularly about this research project: http://www.cse.ogi.edu/CSLU/21lang.html http://www.cse.ogi.edu/CSLU/contest.html http://www.cse.ogi.edu/CSLU/ The numbers 1-800 below will only work within the US, Hawaii and Alaska. I am sorry that you can not participate in this project if you live abroad, but if you know people who speak one of the languages below and resides in the U.S., please forward this message to them. Thank you for your participation. Below you can also see a complete list of the other languages being studied. Sincerely, Terri Lander Language Identification Project at Oregon Graduate Institute Center For Spoken Language Understanding CALL NOW TO WIN ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS!! 1-800-738-3834 Re: Korean The Center for Spoken Language Understanding at the Oregon Graduate Institute is collecting a database of telephone speech from native speakers of 22 different languages. The data will be distributed free of charge to research laboratories worldwide for research in speech recognition and automatic language identification. The goal of this research is to collect enough speech samples to study language differences and to train computers to identify languages automatically. Korean is one of the 22 languages we are collecting. If you are a native speaker of a different language, please see the list of languages and phone numbers below. If you are a native speaker of Korean and would like to participate in this study there is a TOLL FREE number that you can call from anywhere within the continental United States. This is a free call. When you call the 1-800 number you will be asked a series of questions, and will be given time to respond in Korean. We will record the answers to each question. The identity of each caller will be kept confidential. The Center For Spoken Language Understanding is funded by research grants from several government agencies and by contributions from industry. The Oregon Graduate Institute is a not-for-profit academic institution. Each Korean caller is offered the chance to be entered in to a drawing for 1,000 dollars. After the data collection is completed OR on March 1, 1996, whichever comes first, we will randomly select one caller to win this cash prize. Entry into this drawing is VOID WHERE PROHIBITED BY LAW. Some restrictions apply. Official rules may be obtained upon request. Please feel free to forward this message to people you think my be interested. If you have additional questions please contact Terri Lander by or by email, tlander@cse.ogi.edu or by phone: (503)-690-1381. Thank you very much for your help, Sincerely, Terri Lander here are the phone numbers of all of the languages we are currently collecting. The langauges are divided into two categories, based on the type of award for calling. Please let me know which you think is a better incentive, and what other coupon choices you would like to see. Also please tell me where you heard about the data collection, (what place on the net, or what flier etc..) You can say this when you give your address during the phone call. to enter a drawing for 1000 dollars: dial 1-800 and then: english 276-8382 farsi 276-8386 french 738-3815 hindi 276-8379 hungarian 738-3819 korean 738-3834 malay 276-8374 mandarin 738-3816 polish 738-3820 portuguese 738-3840 swahili 738-3837 swedish 276-8375 to receive a $3 coupon from McDonald's or TCBY Frozen Yogurt: dial 1-800 and then: arabic 298-2311 cantonese 298-2346 czech 323-5767 german 439-1531 italian 298-2308 japanese 819-2903 russian 298-2344 spanish 291-7644 vietnamese 589-7656 tamil 323-5762 These are the only languages we are studying at this time.
