Computer Science Department Robotics Institute (RI) Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCI) Language Technologies Institute (LTI) (예전에 Center for Machine Translation이었음) 그외 몇개의 Center 제가 알기로는 원래 CS department로 시작해서 몇개의 연구소 (Institute)가 추가되었는데, 현재는 이 연구소들이 각각 하나의 과(Department) 역활을 하고 있습니다. 즉, 각각이 학생을 뽑고 학위를 수여하는 거죠. Program에 관해서는 SCS Homepage를 보시길... http://www.cs.cmu.edu/scs/scs.html 들리는 바로는 CS Department에서 박사학위를 받은 한국유학생이 아직 한명도 없었다고 하고요. (진짠가 ?) RI에 현재 학생은 없고, 학위를 받은 사람이 3(?)명정도. HCI에 staff겸으로 있는 학생 한명. LTI에 MS 학생 한명. 그외 더 있는지는 잘 모르겠군요. (대학원 얘기임) LTI에 한국어 관련 project가 있으니, 한국어 처리에 관심이 있으신 분은 한번 알아보면 좋을거라고 생각합니다. RI도 그 분야에서 top 1-2 라고 하는 좋은 프로그램입니다. RI에 졸업하신 분이 써놓은 글을 소개하면... --------------------------------------------------------------------------- My advice for admission to Ph.D. Program at Robotics Institute --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Warning: This is only my opinion. Further inquiry about requirements for admission, etc, PLEASE see RI web page. I have decided to make this section available after I have received occasional inquiry from students in Korea so that I don't have to repeat myself answering for the similar questions, thus saving my and their time/effort. I hope this is useful to everyone. Although I work at RI, I am not really familiar with the admission procedure at RI any more because it has been quite a while since I graduated. The following answers are from my experience and the observations I have made for the last few years. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- What are the important factors for a Korean applicant to be admitted to the program? Not necessariry in order, but I think these are important in my opinion. Excellent GPA, TOEFL and GRE scores (remember you are competing with Chinese and Indian students whose TOEFL or GRE scores are really high), Excellent recommendation letters from your professors, Some publications, Good match between your research interest and RI professors' research interest, Available research fund at RI or from you (or your sponsor) in your research interest, Personal contact with a professor at RI and his recommendation to the Admission committee on your behalf --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Is it so hard to be admitted as a Korean applicant? Absolutely no if you are strong in the above factors. In general, it is very competitive to get an admission to PhD program at RI because they provide scholarship to all the students during their study with monthly stipend. Typically RI admit 10-12 students every year. And it will take 5-6 years to graduate. I see a few students from China or India every year, but no new Korean students since 1989. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- What kinds of background are required to enter RI ? I believe most students have electrical/ mechanical engineering or computer science majors. However, RI does not look for any specific majors as requirement to the admission. Your research potential and research interest are more important. I know a student whose major was in philosophy and worked in AI area for robotics application. In general, a good engineering background would be o.k. as long as you can show your potential as a good Ph.D. student by the forementioned factors. I strongly recommend you to contact one or more professors at RI working in research area which you are or will be interested in and see how they respond to you.
