(http://www.netwrx.net/thurrott/ 에서 가져옴) The Future of Windows * Windows 95 (Chicago) Windows 95 was released in August 1995 as Build 950. Since that time, it has sold over 40 million copies and has had one minor and one major upgrade. The minor upgrade, known as Service Pack 1 (SP1), upgraded Windows 95 to build 950a. The major upgrade, OEM Service Release 1 (OEM SR1), was made available to hardware manufacturers and included the SP1 upgrade plus addition hardware driver support. It is also known as build 950a. I am guessing that most everyone is familiar with Windows 95 by now. For more information about Windows 95, please refer the Microsoft Windows 95 home page and my Windows 95 Page. * Windows 95 OEM Service Release 1 (OSR-1 or OEM SR1) OSR-1 is simply the August 1995 release of Windows 95 with the drivers from the first service pack installed. It almost exactly the same as the initial Windows 95 release. * Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2 (OSR-2 or OEM SR2) Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2 is the first major refresh of Windows 95. Like OSR-1, this refresh will be sold with new computers and not sold at retail. Oddly, OSR-2 upgrades Windows 95 to Build 950b, despite the fact that the actual build number is much higher than that. If you purchase a new copy of Windows 95 this year at a retail store or already own it, you will be able to upgrade to most of OSR-2's features by downloading components from the Microsoft web site. The OSR-2 release CD will not upgrade an existing Windows 95 machine--it must be installed on an empty hard drive. New features include FAT32 (a new file system geared toward large capacity drives), 120 Mb floppy support, DirectX 2.0 multimedia drivers, improved networking and DUN, and more. OSR-2 went to manufacturing the first week of September. For more information about Windows 95 OEM SR2, please refer to Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2 Is Coming, a Microsoft white paper and the FAT32 File System, a Microsoft market bulletin. * Windows 95 OEM Service Release 3 (OSR-3 or OEM SR3) (Detroit) OSR-3 is the Universal Serial Bus (USB) add-on for OSR-2. USB is a 12Mbits per second desktop bus, similar to Apple's Desktop Bus that allows you to daisy chain up to 127 devices off the same port. A USB chip costs about $0.50 to implement and most new PCs coming out this Christmas will support it. A future version (or Service Pack) for Windows NT will also support USB. If you don't see the importance of USB, I don't know what else to say, but consider this: Microsoft thinks it is so important that they are basing a whole service release of Windows 95 around it. * Windows 97 (Memphis) Little is known about the next major version of Windows, other than that it will be the last of the line. After Windows 97, users will be expected to upgrade to Windows NT. Windows 97 is due in late 1997 or early 1998 and will be released simultaneously with Windows NT 5.0.
