A Buddhist sutra says, "All sins are caused by doubt." When doubts accumulate in your mind little by little, you will easily commit crimes. I have heard of two family tragedies. In one case, a wife suspected that her husband had a girlfriend, and she committed suicide. When she was sent to the hospital, it was too late. Even if she could have been saved , she could never have completely recovered. Because of her doubt, she not only harmed herself, but also tortured her whole family. In the other case, a husband long suspected that his wife was having an affair with another man. One day, he and his wife had a quarrel. He took up a knife and fatally stabbed her. When she was sent to the hospital, the surgeons could not save her. Their children were crying bitterly, but she never woke up. When the man cooled down, he realized he had made a serious mistake. He rushed to the hospital to see her, but it was too late. The brokenhearted children all turned very cold toward him, because they saw what he had done to their mother. A good family was thus destroyed because of his doubt. We can see that doubts can indeed create sins. The most important thing in spiritual formation is to cultivate confidence. Without confidence, we can never get anywhere. Confidence is the opposite of doubt.
